IEEE WCNC'2016 Workshop on:

Novel Waveform and MAC Design for 5G

 

Despite their remarkable progress, wireless/mobile broadband networks are under tremendous pressure for further evolution. Requirements for the next-generation of systems refer to 1000 times more capacity, 1ms maximal latency, highest possible quality of experience and seamless connectivity for users. To meet these targets, operational and infrastructure changes will be required that will incur costs. At the same time revenues are not growing, at the same rate as the costs, as average revenue per user (ARPU) is expected to remain at best constant in mature markets. In this regards, there is an imperative need for technologies that will improve cost-efficiency. So, a major challenge for future networks is to map traffic of various types (and QoS requirements) across the most appropriate radio technology and spectrum band (including licensing schemes), to serve the ever increasing traffic demands at the right price. Today, the convergence of technologies lies down typically at the IP plane. Unfortunately, wireless technology management is hidden at this level and cannot be optimized. For the same reason, quality of experience (QoE) cannot be managed at this level either. Therefore, there is need for a better exploitation of heterogeneous wireless systems, together with densification of cellular technology to provide higher capacity and support for QoE requirements.

 

This workshop, inspired by the recent advances in novel MAC and waveform design for 5G research initiative, envisions contributions including different aspects on Heterogeneous network ranging from radio protocols to energy efficient networking topologies, and testbed implementation. This workshop will bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent results related to physical and MAC strategies for improving capacity and spectral efficiency on the mobile terminal side, as well as on the network side. Specific topics include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Information theoretic issues of HetNets

  • Novel waveform for 5G

  • 3D channel modelling

  • Channel Estimation techniques

  • Modulation and Energy Efficiency for 5G

  • MAC layer design for 5G

  • Interference Management for 5G

  • Mobility Management for 5G

  • Backhaul and fronthaul Transmissions for 5G

  • System-Level Modeling for 5G

  • Architecture Experimental demonstrations, tests and performance characterization of large-scale wireless systems
